I've got a Scar 17s that is my DMR/short to midrange hunting rifle. I'm trying to figure out if there is a good and inexpensive optic available. I'm thinking a 1-6 or 4-14 zoom range. The issue at hand is that the rumour mill claims that SCAR's are rather effective at murdering optics, however I have yet to find anyone who has actually found this to be the case with any quality optic. So I'm looking for firsthand ish experience here, not uncle bob heard from his friend etc. Anyway thanks in advance everyone.

He has discussed a lot recently that the scar17s kills scopes. and that he would likely either go with a red dot (aimpoint) or maybe a fixed power like a vcog. I have a us optics 1.5-6 on my scar 17s, with about 300 rounds through it, and it still works. i emailed us optics and they said that their scopes would stand up to the abuse of the scar 17s. i kept that email to print out for if/when i have to send the scope back in the future. so i can assure you that my 1.5-6 has lasted about 300 rounds on a 17s.
Thank you for the reply sir. I have heard the commentary where Senor Rex makes mention of the Scar being scientifically engineered to deatroy optics however with the US military using the SCAR as their DMR Rifle there have to be some options. Anyway thank you for the recomendation on the US optics. I was wondering about maybe the primary arms 1-8/8 with the reticle etched into the glass. I figure thats one less thing to break and with the small objective lens it may hold up despite being a budget optic. Inalso want to apologize for any grammatical errors. Currently the commentary screen is completely black and I cant see anything I'm typing. Best regards and thanks again tfor the recomendation sir.
I would be willing to try that primary arms. Especially the platinum. If it breaks at least it has a lifetime warranty. You could fix it and selk it or put it in a different gun.
My scrren is also blacked out on my phone.
SCAR-17 is a scope killer - you are limited to only a few super-rugged prismatic optics... think ELCAN M145, maybe an ACOG, a Primary Arms 3X or 5X Compact series should hold up, or even an IOR 4x24 M1 (not prismatic but tough as hell).
My scar 17 has killed a vortex razor hd and a leupold mark 4 twice. Both scopes had the same problem they just quit tracking. I would spin the turrets and nothing happened. That being said, both companies have excellent customer service and repaired the scopes. Leupold fixed the same scope twice. Now my scar has an eotech. I'm thinking of going with an swfa 3-15. Per the manufacturer they are rated for 50 bmg.
Thank you folks. I've got an ACOG I took to Iraq and it held up under some ridiculously harsh conditions there. Couple VBIED's where every other optic in my vehicle, (m68's and Eotech's) imploded due to the overpressure. Only issue I have putting it on is the reticle is for 556. Only reason I haven't run it yet. It's the old tritium 4*32 with the upside down christmas tree and irons up top. Anyway thanks again.
I spent just about 3 weeks listening to Rex's reviews on scopes. Probably watched those 3 videos 4 times. Each time taking notes and going off to read other reviews, etc. I finally settled for US Optics B-10 being that is 10x, (the brand) scored all A in the "Scope Selection" video and it is a US Optics.
I ordered and took about a month to get here. It arrived last Monday and I mounted on my SCAR17 and headed to the range. I've never done long range shooting before so I was excited and a bit nervous. Thanks to Rex I was able to connect with the SCAR all the way to 675 yds with regularity.
The SCAR performed very well all through the day. In the back of my mind it was that little reminder of what Rex's been warning regarding the SCAR. About 30 rounds in I started seeing this black line while looking through the scope. At first I thought I had a hair laying across the lens and was praying it was nothing more than that. It took me 5 mins to gather the courage to do a quick inspection and low and behold the rubber gasket sealing the glass to the eye piece has worked its way out and it's now just dangling there.
It didn't affect the scope in any way. I was able to finish the day with 250 rounds through the SCAR. I noticed that each time I'd fire the rubber would jump in and out. I didn't try to force it back in to avoid doing any more damage.
Other than this issue the scope performed very well. Clarity, tracking was right on with my tables and the operation of this scope is very intuitive if you know about the EREK2 turret it comes equipped with.
I've already reached out to USO and explained the situation so hopefully come Monday they make this right.
I do have an ACOG for this rifle and will probably just put that back and relegate the SCAR for < 500 yd shooting and get a bolt action and mount the "replacement" B-10 once it arrives to be my long range platform....(Good excuse to get a new rifle...hehehe)
In any event, heed the warning and don't chance your scope to the SCAR.
I still have to see what USO will do so I'll keep you posted and enjoy the pics :/
Thank you very much sir. Nice pics and I hope USO does you right. Im currently running a nikon m223 on this for hunting season. Just about 10rds through it. Once season is over its going back to irons until I can figure something else out.
JW It took them 4 minutes to respond this morning and already have an RMA to return the scope for service. I think I will just get the scope back and slap that ACOG back on the SCAR. It's a shame that I won't be able to shoot it long range but I may just go with the SWFA straight 10 on it.
As I mentioned, I'm using this as an excuse to get into a bolt action so the USO will have a good platform to complement.
Those are my two options for you. I hope you find a solution soon because it was rewarding hitting that steel at 675 yds.
Sorry to hear about your b10. It's a shame the SCAR is scope killer because they are pretty accurate for a gas gun. I had lot of fun with mine before it ate my scopes. Now it's a safe queen with a useless eotech sitting on top of it. Please let us know when you find one that works.
I agree with you about wishing they didn't kill scopes. Im really glad USO took care of you. Customer service can be hard to find these days. It's one reason I haven't stepped foot inside a Walmart in about four years.
Well, it took about a month to get the scope back. No mention of the work done on the packing list but I did speak with the customer service rep, who by the way was very helpful, attentive and kept me up to date through the wait, and she mentioned they did a full service: "Replace the rings, etc".
I finally got it to the range today but on a new host (Savage 12 LRP 6.5CM). Needless to say I'm pleased with the results. The rifle and scope combo is AWESOME! See for yourselves below.
The SCAR went back to the ACOG and I shot out to 200 yds and was pretty pleased but can not be compare to having magnified optics.
