Hi Rex and crew.
I am an EOD tech in the Air Force and I had a question on scope selection.
I just purchased a Browning X-bolt Hells Canyon Speed in a 7mm Rem Mag and I am debating on getting:
Viper PST Gen II 3-15x44 FFP EBR-2C MRAD
SWFA SS 3-15x44 FFP
Primary Arms 4-14x44 ACSS R-Grid
I plan on using it for hunting Deer/Elk in Montana as well as get into long range shooting.
I have a somewhat limited budget but could afford all 3 options. If you have any other ones that you think would be better for an all around scope I would appreciate your opinion.
I have enjoyed your Sniper 101 Series and have learned a lot. I can’t wait to start putting your teaching into practice.
Thanks!
Howdy! First off; Thanks for your service, brother! I think the Vortex PST line and the PA 4-14x44 scopes are very similar in overall construction and quality, that being said the PA (being quite a bit less money) offers a greater value for the money in my humble opinion. NOTE: In my experience, neither of these upper tier 3 optics will exhibit flawless tracking precision. Thus you won't be expecting 100% reliable and precise corrections using the turrets for extreme precision shooting due to their internal asian style of construction, thus you would be best equipped to use the reticles in either of these scopes to apply your corrections using hold-off. Both reticles offer great design if you have detailed firing tables and plan to look up a solution for each shot. After visiting with Dimitri (reticle designer/engineer) from PA, I can tell you they took into account all the details to make sure the reticle is true and spaced correctly in the lens stack to ensure it is in MRADs. Also, the chevron aiming point in the PA R-Grid reticle is very desirable for zeroing. Although the Vortex PST is a very popular scope - loved by many - the PA 4-14x55 R-Grid offers the better value in my opinion. Hope this is helpful in your selection!
Love your sniper101 videos, Rex. Like the Scripture references as well!
I was also looking at the SWFA SS 3-15x44 FFP because I am in the same situation. I have one bolt gun I use for hunting and I would like to get into LR shooting. The SWFA fixed 10x is not usable for hunting (My hunting involves shorter ranges 50-200 yards, and i need fast target aquisition, but would still like to use a scope).
1. IS THE TURRET TRACKING FOR THE 3-15 POWER SWFA scope NOT ON PAR WITH THE FIXED 10X SWFA SCOPE?
2. HOW IS THE TURRET TRACKING FOR THE SWFA 5-20 x50mm scope? ( IT IS A BIT PAST THE EDGE OF MY BUDGET. )
3. IS IT RIDICULOUS TO CONSIDER QUICK DETACH RINGS/MOUNTS so I can switch scope son the same rifle (hunting vs LD shooting) or to switch a good scope between rifles easily?
I don't mind re-zeroing a little, but if the zero doesn't hold after it is reset with this types of mounts I will give up on that idea.
4. ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THESE TYPES OF MOUNTS FOR LR shooting?
