Well its 5:30 am Saturday morning and I am
Waiting on day light to go to the range to do a little
More testing. A week from Monday I will have my first
Attempt on a 1000 yard Range. Pretty excited but I know it will be a learning process. I will update this post after I have given it a try. 450 is my longest to this point.
It's 5:45 and I'm waiting to go to my Precision Rifle class. Our 500 meter range is still closed, so the longest shots will be 300 meters! :-( We'll probably do quite a bit of positional shooting.
Have fun and good luck a week from Monday!
Well.... how'd it go? it's been 4 days......
This coming Monday will be my big day.
I will post back how it turns out.
I hope Geoff had a good precision shooting class this past Saturday
We had a great time, thanks!
Nice. I need to look into some classes myself. I hope I can hit some steel Monday.
Obviously you're out of your rut! What combo did you finally settle on for your artificial support? I surmise that you mounted the SWFA scope and it's working out well?
The guys that put on my class charge $250 for two days, as they have a similar philosophy as Rex. All have full time jobs, but want to share what they've learned over the years.
As an aside, one poor feller-not me, thank goodness-had an awful time getting on paper at 100 yards the first day, then on the second day, his scope loosened up.
We did a drill where everyone switched rifles and fired at 100 yard 1/2 sized steel silhouette. I could see his reticle was canted a bit, but after I fired, it was canted about 15 degrees! YIKES! I guess it pays to check your equipment fairly often. ;-)
I been working on my Remington 700 308 for this first trip. She seems to like the hornaday 168 bthp pretty good. I put a night force SHV 5-20×5 6mm on it.
The swfa scope i just bought I put on savage 300 win mag long range hunter.
Still just trying to break it in right now.
I will take it too but really just to see how well I can see the target at 1000 yards with the fix 10 power.
I hope the weather is good that day, right now they change the forecast every day.
That is my Remington 700 308
I know my bullet velocity and ballistic coefficient. So I hope that will get me close. Plan to get the true elevation information as for out to 1000 yard that I can. Truly I am probably not ready but for 50 bucks I'm going to give it a try. Like I said I'll try to collect as much true data as I can.
It should be fun anyway.
I failed to mention that I stopped using the bipod and started using shooting bags that's working out better for me. Also I am still in a benchrest position. I might try the prone position Monday not sure.
I did not do as well as I hope to but I had fun. We started at 500 yards. Had some really good groups at 500 yards with my 308. I did ok at 800 yards but could not hit anything at 900 much less 1000 yards with my 308.
I hit the 1000 yard steel one time with my 300 win mag got lucky one time. LoL. Still working on my loads for it .
My coworkers and his son was popping a 10 inch plate at 1000 yards.
As we where shooting at 800 to 1000 yards there where deer walking on the range around 300 and 400 yard area.
All in all it went ok for our first time trying to shoot past 450 ysrds. Weather was better than we expected. Definitely got plenty of room for improvement. LoL
What's your diagnosis on the problems at 900 and 1000 with your 308?
Not sure. I am going to look at some different bullets and consider going to a better ballistic coefficient bullets. Most of it may be me.
Taking classes could not hurt. They have competition at this long range .
I my start to attend some of the events to try and pick up some useful information
May have found something my Remington 700 308 likes .
Sierra 155 match Kings with IMR 4895
Need to get back out to the long range and see what we can do
