Been a while since I've been on here, and been a while since I've done any shooting. If you read my post over in the "Bible Study" section that'll explain why.
I got the itch again. Loaded up some rounds and went to a new range about an hour from me. C2 Shooting Center in Virginia Beach. They have a 300 yard range. I've got a load dialed in that seems to be working. Plugged everything in to the spreadsheet the other day and printed it off. So far it's spot on. My first group of the day was 9/10 in about 3/4" at 100 yards. The one flier was my cold bore shot. Not sure if that was me or the rifle. Likely me since I'm pretty rusty. Once I got my zero confirmed I moved out to 300 yards. Plugged in the numbers and cranked up the elevation a bit. The spreadsheet was dead on. Moved over to the steel range and finally got to give it a ring. Had to quit when my barrel got hot. All in all a good day. About 100 rounds expended. Felt good.
Also first time shooting the rifle with the "Fat Bastard" brake on it. This thing is a pussycat. No problem with free-recoiling the rifle, but still jumps too much to watch your hit. Gotta work on that.

Welcome back, brother!
You still have that old truck, and if so, any more critters deciding to hitch a ride? I'm not a huge fan of free recoil, as I also find it hard to spot misses. I'd rather be able to adjust my fire on my rare misses. 🤣🤣🤣 But seriously, I'd rather do a tad of "muscling", and know how to adjust than have no clue. As for that "Fat Bastard", about half of the guys I shoot with on a semi-regular basis use "sound loudeners", just under half use cans, and one keeps his muzzle bare. Guess who I prefer to shoot with? 😉
What caliber are you shooting? And didn't you have Rex take a gander at your rig at the seminar? Something about a "crappy trigger", as I recall? 😊 Once again, glad that you are getting back into the swing of things!
It's a .30-06 with a 8.5 twist barrel. Using 220 grain Lapua Scenar-L bullets over 56 grains of H4831-SC. Gets out the barrel at 2500 fps. Yes, at the seminar Rex used it as a "demonstrator" at the seminar. I had complained the trigger had an inconsistent break so he dry fired it a few times and said, "Yeah that does kinda suck." I've since replaced it with a Huber two stage and it's SWEET.
My first shot off one of the benches yesterday sent papers, empty ammo boxes, and plastic rest blocks flying. They also have divider plates you can set up as barriers between you and the next shooter. They seem to diffuse the sound a bit. I wouldn't mind a can but I can't justify dropping a grand and waiting a year for permission to use something that does the same job as a 50 cent pack of ear plugs.
The old truck has long since been sold. There was no way I could keep it. No place to keep it and I've already got two trucks in the driveway. It was fun to drive it again though.
First, I forgot to mention how much I liked your group! So, I like it, especially for you having laid off for some time! I had to laugh out loud when you mentioned all of the stuff that flew off the bench! Good thing I didn't have a brew in my hand! I'm pretty sure that that happened to me once or twice, and I know I've seen it happen to other shooters. Most of my shooting these days is done from the prone, unless my buds and I decide to use our benches or chairs as make shift barricades. Yeah, the wait for a can is just plain stupid, but the guys I shoot with are happy! The lead instructor up here divides shooting classes into three groups. Bare muzzles, brakes, and the "Civilized People".
If I'm shooting with, or spotting for someone with a brake, I double up on ear pro. Foamies under my electronic muffs. It helps to keep that pressure wave from giving me a splitting headache, and that's on the 500 yard range, which is uncovered! For reasons unkonwn to me, there's talk about covering the 100 and 500. The 300 and 70 are already enclosed. Bunch of pansies, I guess! I also replaced the factory trigger on my 6.5CR with a Huber. Second best move I made, after taking the RX courses! By the way, when are you planning on doing the RX1000, and where? The crew will be back in PA in October, and I'll be there, the good Lord willing, and the creek don't rise! Sorry to hear about the truck, but I'm sure it was a wise decision.
