Has anyone used a clamp on muzzle break? Do they work? Are they comparable to a thread on, or cause more problems than they help?

I don't use a clamp on, but from other readings, they are not too bad, depending on who makes it, of course. Is your barrel not threaded-I'm guessing it's not? What contour is the barrel and can it be threaded? What caliber? How much would a smith charge to thread the barrel and time the brake for you? Do you live in a state where silencers are forbidden? How much is a clamp on brake vs one that is threaded on? Are you going to compete and want to keep the length of your rifle shorter, or will you use a can in the future? Answering those questions and knowing how much you are willing to spend should help you decide whcih route to take.
Here's a link to an article that may help. Also, the writer did a test on various brakes to see which ones performed better. Neither article is very recent, but it's what I could find. Keep in mind that if the brake is not timed correctly, recoil will not be straight back, which is why the Area 419 self timing Hellfire brake is very popular, but it's not a clamp on. It's also very obnoxious for the person next to you, as most brakes are! :-D
Hope this helps a little.

Thank you for the reply. The gun is a 300 win mag with a standard bull barrel. It is actually my daughters boyfriends gun, he was asking me about one. We live in down state Illinois so the gun grabbers in chicago pretty much make the rules, no suppressors are legal. We don't have any gun smiths that can thread the barrel, the closest is several hours away, but i'm pushing him to go that route, even if we have to send it out to get it done, it just seems that having it threaded would open up more options in the future.
I agree with having the barrel threaded for future considerations. There have to be some competent gunsmiths who would thread the barrel. I suspect that the big problem is how busy they are and how little profit they may make on the job relatively speaking.
You might want to have him contact Area 419 to see if they will thread the barrel if he buys a brake from them. Also, ADCO Firearms in Ohio will do the job, but obviously the barreled action will need to be shipped to either one. Both companies have a good reputation for quality work.
Sorry to hear that you’re stuck with decisions made by morons, but our choices for Governor here in Ohio next election boil down to a rock and a hard place, so I can empathize.
