Trying to get my GF and her two daughters (13 and 16) a better start than I had (bad habits to break).
Can someone recommend some good videos that explain proper building of a prone firing position, right down to the basics of where the buttstock should sit on the shoulder, proper head position (not leaning way over to the side...) and other rudimentary basics.
Rex Sniper 101 may cover it in bits and pieces, but I could only find one (#88) that went into some detail, but it comes in with the premise of the above basics are already established.
All of my other searching for any tutorials...none of them cover the basics.
All three started out on a Mk12 and shot sub MOA 10 round groups with IMI 77gr, and the mother recently shot a bolt action for the first time ever, and got a 5 round .704" group with a 6.5 Grendel, Howa mini 1500.
All three of them want to go to the shooting matches that I go to and compete, so I want to give them the best possible start under the circumstances.
I would prefer to take them to a local class like Appleseed, but options in our area are limited, and between work, school, scheduling, and funds, it just is not feasible.
Thank you in advance!
Thank you Geoff.
Now if someone can explain "Pocket" on the shoulder (with visual aids), because even I am unclear on that, I just bring the rifle up and go.
Sticks, Your'e welcome. The picture on Rex's Instagram shows it little better.
Easy way to find the pocket:
Hold your firing hand softly with fingers extended flat on your firing side cheek (think Kevin in Home Alone but with just one hand slapping the face). Slide it down till you contact your chest just below your collar bone. Feel the area with your other hand. That's the location. Don't try to find a "pocket" there when not proned out behind a rifle. It forms when you get proned out behind the rifle properly and it's not really a pocket so much as the pectoralis major starts to scrunch up and form a ridge on the bottom edge of the area and just above the peck toward your collarbone is formed a sort of soft part.
The key being communicated is, don't stick the recoil pad "on" your shoulder joint or into the shoulder/collarbone junction. It's a good way to end up with a trip to the doctor. The recoil pad should be moved toward your neck from your shoulder so that your head position is as close to straight up as possible. Adjustable cast-off/cast-on in a rifle stock helps with this. It will feel weird until you get used to hitting your target every single time.
HTH!
OOOUUUUCCCCHHH!!!!!
Thank you for the comments everyone. Hope you all had a good holiday.
So, when shouldering, should the top of the buttstock be anchored into the shoulder, or sticking above the clavicle (collarbone) about 1". It seems that when I am shouldering, I am getting it positioned correctly, horizontally, I am just not sure if I am bringing it up too high.
My rifle is an AR15 with a Magpul PRS. The GF and her daughters are adjustable stocks (Boyds AT1)
