New to the forums. I have watched alot of Rex's videos. Hadn't decided on a rifle, but several months ago Wallyworld was clearancing out some rifles. I picked up 2 Ruger American's. One in .308, and the second .30-06. Both out the door. $199 each. Believe it or not have not had the chance to shoot either. I want to follow some recommendation since alot of folks seem to feel these rifles shoot very well. My conundrum are the stocks. They are crap. Any suggestions on aftermarket. I was thinking of doing a long range rifle with the .308 like Rex did with the savage 10 fcp. I already have scope rings, etc. What stock should I purchase for it. There isn't much in the aftermarket for it. I have seen LSS chassis, and magpul. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth my Ruger American Predator in 6.5 sits in an LSS chassis. My rifle shoots great but after about 5 shots in a row it starts spreading out pretty good. Keep in mind they are a hunting rifle not a target rifle so this is normal especially with a light barrel. That being said use what you have for now and upgrade when you can, if you feel the need. Boyds gunstocks makes stocks for them but you have to use the factory mags. They are really inexpensive usually around $100-200 depending on the features you choose and the reviews are pretty good. I chose the LSS route for the aisc mags.
There is also some mods you can do to the factory stock to get by. Clearance the forend to make sure it stays free floating under bipod load and filling the stock to add weight and stiffness makes quite the difference for little money.
I tried these mods and it didn't work too well. Mine still had 12" of impact difference at 100 yards from sandbags to a loaded bipod. If I free recoiled the rifle it was only about 1" of difference. I had the barrel free floated and stiffened with epoxy. I personally don't like free recoiling my rifle but some guys do it. Again you may have different results but 1" is too much not to mention 12". If you are going to be shooting from strickly sandbags then this might work but I use mine for hunting so I need to use a bipod or backpack and that unknown variable was too much for me.
I've had similar but not such extreme variance with my American 7mm08. I haven't shot it enough to attribute why though. I was shooting some reloads put together by the guy I bought it from. I shot 5 and lets just say the quality of the reloads wasn't ideal. I will be unloading them and restarting from scratch.
